First introduced in the
1950s, reverse osmosis (RO) is fast becoming a popular choice by many companies
seeking purified water in large amounts. Developed for desalination purposes,
reverse osmosis takes its cue from natural osmosis to purify water by turning the
process around. It involves pumping dirty water under high pressure through an RO
membrane, allowing clean water to go through, while flushing contaminants out.
Commercial reverse osmosis systems do this on a large scale, benefitting many
operations through such applications as processing grade water for
pharmaceuticals, and beverages and food products. Here are some of RO’s advantages:
- Quick and Efficient. When you pump water into a commercial reverse osmosis system, there's no long wait. For example, distillation systems that purify through steam and condensation often require you to wait for hours to get the same amount of water back. Plus, they require a lot of energy. In contrast, RO filters are fast, and the only energy required is for adding pressure to the water.
- Low maintenance. Other water purification systems need regular clean-up and maintenance. All you need to do with RO systems is to change the membrane. This can be done in a matter of minutes instead of hours, plus, only on a monthly, and not weekly, basis.
